Currently reading: Gate 7
Summary (From Baka-Updates):
An innocent sightseeing trip to Kyoto opens up a magical realm to shy high schooler Chikahito Takamoto. Visiting a legendary shrine, Chikahito finds himself in the mystical world of Hana and her comrades—and his immunity to their powers leads them to believe that he’s no ordinary awkward teenager! Protecting our world from violent elemental beasts, Hana and her team welcome the confused Chikahito—who isn’t quite sure that he wants to be caught in the middle of their war! One thing’s certain, though: since he’s smitten with aloof, childlike warrior Hana, he’s along for the ride, for better or worse!
Thoughts so far:
The art is really pretty. CLAMP in the past few years has generally been getting prettier and prettier.
However, I really don’t think this manga is on par with the level of their earlier work. Yes, it’s readable and yes, none of the characters are unlikeable, but I want to be WOWED. Maybe it’s because CLAMP has been living in the past for too long with Tsubasa and xxxHOLiC, but I don’t think that the characters of Gate 7 are anywhere near as compelling as the characters in the earlier work. Perhaps this is why I don’t remember anyone’s names apart from Chikahito and Hana…
Truthfully, if this wasn’t by CLAMP, I probably wouldn’t be reading it. That being said, I’m still willing to stick it out and hope things get more interesting. I mean, since CLAMP is leaving Chikahito’s powers up in the air thus far, they most likely have something interesting planned. CLAMP is always good at weird and unpredictable plot twists.
So yeah. I’m gonna stick this one out, or else I’m going to let the new chapters accumulate and then catch up (like I do with a lot of things =_=).
